Protective gear (helmets, pads, etc.) are used to preventinjury. Sparring permits the student to apply some of the many techniqueslearned, as well as try new and original techniques. It is also a good way totest the effectiveness of various techniques. |  | Ippon Kumite is semi-free, or pre-arranged sparring. One student throws oneor two pre-arranged techniques while another attempts to block and counterattack.
